New cotton species developed to fight whitefly that spreads virus
Delhi. Whiteflies are among the top ten destructive pests in the world, harming more than 2000 plant species and also serve as a vector for 200 plant viruses. Cotton is one of the most affected crops. In 2015, two-thirds of cotton crops were destroyed by pests in Punjab. National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) Lucknow has developed pesticide-resistant cotton to fight whitefly and plans to start its field trials from April to October this year at Punjab Agricultural University, Faridkot, Ludhiana. NBRI Senior Scientist, Dr PK Singh said, "Bt cotton is resistant to only two insects, it is not resistant to whiteflies. In 2007 we decided to work on another insect repellent whitefly. It causes damage to not only cotton but also many other crops, causing viral diseases. " Reference All Gujarat News, 20 March 2020 Like this useful information and share it with your farmer friends.
