Foodgrain production in Kharif to remain stable
In many states of the country, the monsoon rains have been less than normal in the current Kharif season. Despite this, the production of foodgrains is expected to be almost the same as last year because there is still time left for sowing paddy and other crops. Trilochan Mahapatra, Director-General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), told the reporters in Delhi that they are hoping for the Kharif crop sowing to match that of last year. He also said that transplanting of paddy can be done till the end of August hence, there is enough time in hand. In the current Kharif season, monsoon rains in June - from June 1 to July 16 - have been less than expected by around 14%. Generally, During this time rain is around 308.4 mm, whereas during the current season there have been only 265.9 mm of rain. Context - 17 July 2019, Outlook Agriculture
