Country's Existing Sugar Production Touches 246 Lakh Tonnes
Maharashtra leads sugar production with 91 lakh tonnes, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 73 lakh tonnes.
New Delhi: At the end of February, sugar production in the country was around 246 lakh tonnes. According to Dilip Walse Patil, President of the National Cooperative Sugar Mills Association, up to 315 lakh tonnes are possible until the end of the sugar season.
Maharashtra is currently the leading sugar produced with 91 lakh tonnes, which is expected to produce about 97 - 700 tonnes of sugar by the end of the season. Uttar Pradesh's sugar production was 73 lakh tonnes and is estimated at 115 lakh tonnes by the end of the season.
In Karnataka, 45 factories produced about 42 lakh tonnes of new sugar. It is followed by Gujarat (9 lakh tonnes), Bihar (5.70 lakh tonnes), Punjab (4.5 lakh tonnes) and Haryana (4.30 lakh tonnes). In Tamil Nadu, only 4.30 lakh tonnes of new sugar were produced by the end of February due to constant drought conditions in the last five years.
