Country’s Coconut Production is Lowest in Four Years, Prices Increased
Coconut production in the country has declined sharply. This has led to an increase in the prices of coconut and coconut oil. According to government data, coconut production decreased by 10% to a four-year low in 2018-19. India is the world's largest producer of coconut.
Due to low production, the price of coconut has doubled to Rs 40 per kg compared to last year. At the same time, the cost of coconut oil has also reached a new high According to the third advance estimate of the Union Ministry of Agriculture, coconut production fell to 213.84 crore units in 2018-19, while coconut production fell to 237.98 crore units in 2017-19.
The main reason for the decline in coconut production is the change in weather conditions. There has been a huge change in the weather in productive areas, particularly in Kerala. There was a drought in the state, and heavy rains were observed. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka account for about 85% of the total coconut production in the world. At the same time, the outbreak of pests increased due to less rain in Karnataka. As a result, the coconut yield decreased by 31%.
