Cabinet approves import of 1.2 lakh tons of onions
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has approved the Central Government's decision to import onions to keep onion prices under control. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the government's decision to import 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the Cabinet has approved the import of 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions.
According to a senior Agriculture Ministry official, unseasonal rains in major onion producing states have damaged the Kharif and Late Kharif crops. Due to which daily arrivals are not increasing in the producer markets. Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan had announced to import one lakh tonnes of onions this month to keep the prices of onion in the country by increasing its availability. MMTC, a central government company doing foreign trade, has also floated a tender to import 4,000 tonnes of onions. According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, onion prices in retail stood at Rs 55 to 80 per kg in different cities of the country on Wednesday.
