Indian Coffee Varieties Awarded With GI Certification
The GI certification will help enhance global visibility and enable coffee growers to get the right value. Geographical Indication (GI) has been awarded to five Indian coffee varieties, a move that aims to enhance their global visibility and enable growers to get the right value.
While Coorg Arabica coffee is grown specifically in the Kodagu district of Karnataka, Wayanad Robusta coffee comes from the Wayanad district of eastern Kerala, Chikmagalur Arabica coffee from the Chikmagalur district of the Deccan plateau of Karnataka, Araku Valley Arabica coffee from the hilly tracks of the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha region, and Babababudangiris Arabica coffee from the central part of Chikmagalur district. According to an official statement issued on Friday by the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, the Monsooned Malabar Robusta Coffee, a unique speciality coffee from India, was given earlier GI certification. India is the only country where coffee cultivation is grown under shade, hand-picked and sun-dried. It is grown over 4.54 lakh hectares by 3.66 lakh farmers. In another development, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on Thursday launched a blockchain-based online marketplace for coffee. The initiative will help integrate farmers with markets in a transparent manner and lead to the realisation of fair prices for coffee producers. India's Coffee Board will work with Bengaluru - based digital commodity management platform Eka Software Solutions (Eka Plus) to develop a blockchain - based marketplace application.
