Whitefly Management in Sugarcane Crop
Introduction: Water logging and excess use of nitrogen cause severe outbreak of whiteflies. Summer droughts and dry spells during monsoon season also favour buildup of this pest. Varieties with broad and long leaves are more susceptible to this pest. The whitefly infestation retards cane growth and reduces sugar content. At 80% leaf infestation, 23.4% loss in cane yield and 2.9% units’ loss in sucrose occurs. To control whiteflies in sugarcane follow these integrated practices. Integrated Pest Management: • Do not cultivate where water stagnates for a longer period of time. Manage the appropriate farm drainage system. • Whitefly populations are usually greater in salty soil cultivation. • Do not take a ratoon crop if there is much more infestation. • Apply recommended dose of phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers. • Avoid insecticides when parasitoids are released into the sugarcane farm. • In case of higher infestation, spray Acephate 75 SP @10 g or Triazophos 40 EC @20 ml or Quinalphos 25 EC @20 ml per 10 litres of water.
