Soybean is an important food source and is considered both a pulse and an oilseed crop. However, it is largely used as an oilseed crop as compared to pulses. Soybean pulses is a great source of protein. Its main components are proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Soybean contains 38-40 % protein, 22 %, oil, 21% carbohydrate, and 12% moisture. In India, Madhya Pradesh is the largest soybean producing state and Soybean Research Center is situated in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Leaf-eating caterpillar in soybean crop causes major damage to the crop. Let us learn more about them. Management • Grow Caster crop around the field. Adults of leaf-eating caterpillar prefer the castor leaves to lay their egg masses on it. • Collect & destroy the castor leaves on which egg masses were laid. • Spray SLNPV@ 250 LE in 500 litres of water per hectare during the evening. • Spray bacterial based powder, Bacillus thuringiensis @ 15 g or Bouveria bassiana, a fungal-based powder @ 40 g per 10 liters of water. • Spray neem seed kernel extract @ 5% or Neem based formulations @ 40 ml (0.15% EC) per 10 liter of water. • On leaves with high infestation, spray Chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC @ 3 ml or Profenophos 50 EC @ 10 ml or Chlorpyriphos 20 EC @ 20 ml or Indoxacarb 15.8 EC @ 10 ml per 10 liter of water.
