Government together with Nafed to Sell Perishable Products in Areas with Demand
Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal stated that the government has joined hands with Nafed to procure perishable products from excess areas and to sell them in places with high demand to ensure better prices for farmers. A mechanism is being developed to link producing states with consuming states under the' Green Operation ' scheme covering tomatoes, onions and potatoes.
The government will take part in this process to ensure that perishable items also reach those involved in the food processing industry. Nafed is an agri-cooperative giant, which mainly procures pulses and oils on behalf of the government. There is daily news from UP, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Maharashtra that farmers dispose of their products or sell their products in distress. This will change in the near future. Work has begun to develop a mechanism to ensure that states that produce excess items are able to transport them to other countries where there is demand. After the inauguration of the second edition of the' Indus Food' export-oriented food and beverage trade fair, the Minister also expressed concern about poor food processing levels in the country.
