Government institution will make the cheapest electric tractor
New Delhi. Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute is going to make electric tractors soon. It will cost a little over one lakh rupees and it will be the cheapest tractor in the Indian market. The government-run research and development wing will see the tractor run for the first time in its Durgapur facility in West Bengal in the next one year.
According to the director of the institute, Harish Hirani, the institute is working towards making a battery-powered small tractor with a capacity of 10 horsepower. This tractor will have a lithium battery. Once fully charged, the tractor will run for an hour. The institute is trying to make very low weight tractors, which is convenient for farmers with a small land. According to the institute, the cost of this tractor will come to Rs 1 lakh per unit, but it will be sold at a slightly higher price. He also said that to charge tractors, the institute is also considering to install solar-powered charging stations in the fields, so that farmers can work in the fields without stopping.
