Central Government: Four Lakh Tonnes of Maize Import to be Sanctioned
The central government plans to approve four lakh tonnes of maize imports to resolve domestic prices. Taking into account the demand of starch mills in collaboration with the poultry feed manufacturers, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has formulated a proposal.
A senior official of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that the price of maize on the domestic market increased by 18% to 20% in the month. In Delhi, maize prices have increased from Rs 2,200 to Rs 2,250 a quintal, and prices have increased to 400 to 450 rupees per quintal within a month. In the Madhya Pradesh market, maize prices range from 2,000 to 2,050 rupees per quintal. In the Rabi season, Bihar is the main producer of maize, while other producing states include Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh.
In the first estimate, the Ministry of Agriculture estimated that the Kharif season 2018-19 produced 214.7 million tonnes of maize, which was higher than the Kharif season of 202.4 lakh tonnes last year. In Kharif, maize production was mainly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
