Agriculture Minister: 75 lakh women self-help groups to be formed by 2022
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that by 2022, a total of 75 lakh women self-help groups (SHGs) will be formed in the country. He said that the Prime Minister's mission of a new India can be realized only with the active participation of women. Tomar said that more than 6.73 crore women have been associated with 60.8 lakh SHGs across the country and the Ministry of Rural Development has plans to create a total of 75 lakh SHGs by 2022 to make women more capable of earning a livelihood. He described the Women's Self-Help Group (SHG) as the backbone of the poverty alleviation program. He said that more than Rs 2.75 lakh crore loan has been provided to self-help groups during the last six years to make women self-reliant. The Union Minister said that under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA), women constitute 55% of the work force and 4.66 lakh women are attached to Deendayal Upadhyaya Gramin Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY).
