Good News for Economy: ‘Near-Normal’ Monsoon Rains This Year
The southwestern monsoon, which waters more than half of India's farmland and is essential to economic growth, is expected to be ' near-normal ' in the current year as the risk of an El Nino weather pattern is looming. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the June-September rainy season's annual rainfall is projected to be 96% of a long-term average. In addition to this projection, the weather office mentioned that the forecast had an error margin of 5%.
The rainy season is important for the country's agriculture as it accounts for more than 70% of the annual rainfall and fills reservoirs that help to irrigate crops. It also helps shape millions of livelihoods and influences food prices. Deficient showers in the country, the world's second-largest producer of rice, wheat and cotton, often lead to lower crop output and higher imports of commodities such as edible oils.
